Both the Philippines and Turkey were founding members of the United Nations in 1946. With the signing of a Treaty of Friendship in 1949, they established diplomatic relations on a nonresidence basis. During the Cold War years, the Philippines and Turkey, separately facing Communist threats, staunchly supported Western democracy. Turkey joined NATO and CENTO and the Philippines, SEATO. In 1990, Turkey established an embassy in Manila, with Ambassador Erhan Yigitbasioglu as the first resident ambassador.
