As part of the competition, streets and squares prepared for the event will be shown to international judges.

Hıdırlık Street in Kaleiçi, Mermerli Street, Hesapçı Street and the Old Yanık Hastane Square are all undergoing landscaping works to be prepared for the competition, said Osman Bağdatlıoğlu, head of the Exporters’ Union of Central Anatolia, one of the organizers of the event.

The streets have been adorned with potted plants, Bağdatlıoğlu said, adding that the sustainability of the project was their priority.

The world botanic expo will be held next year in Antalya, Bağdatlıoğlu said. “We want this province to be an example that will spread to the entire country. We wish to continue the activities on the streets for six months and organize social events and integrate this beauty into the city.”

The project will add value to the brand name of Antalya, he said.

The cost of the project is around 4.5 million Turkish Liras. Belgian and Canadian judges will assess the project in terms of landscaping, social activities, harmony among stakeholders and criteria to protect nature.

“People will see the efforts, get to adopt them and hopefully be enthusiastic while many other municipalities will do the same in their cities. Our aim was to prioritize the environment, flowers and the landscape; we have reached our goal,” Bağdatlıoğlu said.

EXPO 2016 Antalya will be held on 112 hectares of area in Aksu Municipality between April 23 and Oct. 30, 2016. The site will also be open to the public after the event.

In addition to the exporters’ union, the Antalya Governor’s Office, Antalya Municipality, the EXPO 2016 Antalya Agency, the Antalya Culture and Tourism Directorate, the Chamber of Landscape Architects and many other institutions and nongovernmental organizations are all supporting the landscape project.

The judges will stay in Antalya for two days while the work will continue until September, although the project will continue for six months after the conclusion of the competition.
