The first oath was read out by Bennur Karaburun, a deputy elected from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) with an agenda that advocated disabled rights. Karaburun’s candidacy could have come at the intervention of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who saw a photo on social media showing her struggling in the rain in her wheelchair in the western province of Bursa.

The Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP) Feleknas Uca became the first Yazidi deputy to enter the Turkish parliament by taking the oath, although she does not speak Turkish. Uca wore a brooch depicting a peacock, which is a symbol of the Yazidi belief.

On June 24, Ravza Kavakçı wore a headscarf similar to the one her sister wore 16 years before.

Some deputies were performing Islamic fasting when they took their oaths. The AKP’s Mehmet Yüksel apparently forgot about his fast while he was on the rostrum, but remembered in time to release his hold on a glass of water before drinking it.
