Some 26 women and three children were killed as a result of domestic violence within the first two months of 2013 in Turkey, while 22 women were raped in the same period, according to Republican People’s Party (CHP) Ankara deputy Aylin Nazlıaka.

During a press meeting in the Parliament, Nazlıaka also reported that 40 women and one infant were exposed to domestic violence, while 17 women had been sexually harassed within the period.

According to a study by the Association for the Support of Women Candidates (KA-DER), the rate of women in local administrative positions stands at just 1.2 percent, she said. Also, while a total of 1,159 men have been elected as mayors of provincial centers in 17 elections since 1930, only six women have been elected to the same position during this period.

Nazlıaka also noted that Turkey is yet to see a female president and added that there have only been female Cabinet ministers in 17 of Turkey’s 61 administrations.

According to Nazlıaka, the male workforce participation rate is 71.8 percent of the total male population, while it is only 30.2 percent for women.

Very sad. It is even sadder that we would try to justify this as "normal".

PART2:In undeveloped “mental” countries, this problem is a combination of Men’s and Women’s mentality. Men have over inflated ego due to societal pressure "have constantly to prove his virility" and Women rise to be men accessory. Put them together add ignorance and you have society trying to find excuse to women abuses.

PART1:I don't think that religion causes women misery. 122 women are killed in France by their companion in 2012. In 2008, in France, 156 women and 27 men were killed by their intimate partner. It s simply the right of the strongest. There are a lot of places where people don’t believe and Women are mistreated as well and even worst. Violence and abuse is not limited to obvious physical violence there are also emotional, economic, verbal, sexual violence.

@Brian Irlanda: Spot on. All Religions seem to have the same fear of women and to combat the fear, they use dicatorial rules to subjugate the objects that a creating the fear...women.... and call it .. God's will. This way, misogyny can be easily disgused as standard religious practise.

I can't understand why people are "keeping score" about numbers of women murdered in one country or another. It's more important that the problem is recognised and we try to deal with it. Murders in Turkey have a difference complexion to those in the USA. The Turkish problem is based on old and perverted traditions of conservative religionists who believe woman are just property. Unhealthy perverted religious based misogyny is present in all organised religions, Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

This is sad wherever it happens... and it happens everywhere. Testosterone, that substance than makes babies, is toxic and men are violent by nature. Only the veneer of civilization keeps them on check.

yes, ismail, the us is a nation of immigrants taking their cultures with them. don't forget about the honor killings done by recent muslim immigrants to the u.s. america also doesn't count its homicides as terrorism. there is turf war, but we don't make it political. 40,000 murders here in turkey is called terrorism.

Mr Demir, First of all there is a hug disparity in the populations between the US and Turkey. Second of all, your writing on this domestic violence issue is somewhat defensive. Why don't YOU look in your own backyard? How are you treating the women in your life?
