117 immunity files sent to prosecutors’ offices: Justice minister
AA photoA total of 117 files on lawmakers’ immunities were sent to related prosecutors’ offices on June 9, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ has said, announcing the first step in the new judicial processes against lawmakers. Parliament had sent a total 682 summary of proceedings to the government.
“Some 117 files in the ministry were sent to related prosecutors’ offices,” Bozdağ said June 10 while following announcements suggested that a total 682 summary of proceedings regarding 139 lawmakers were sent directly to the government by the parliament.
A constitutional amendment on lifting immunities was published in the Official Gazette on June 8, opening the way for the trial of 152 legislators, amounting to 27.6 percent of the total number of seats, after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s approval.
A total of 799 cases have been opened against lawmakers, including the leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, and deputies from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
