Ten Turkish universities are among the top 500 universities in the world, according to a report from the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory.

Istanbul University, Ankara University, Middle East Technical University, Hacettepe University, Gazi University, Ege University, Bilkent University, Istanbul Technical University, Boğaziçi University and Sabancı University are the Turkish universities ranked among the world’s top universities.

The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory was established at the Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University in 2009. URAP’s main objective is to develop a ranking system for world universities based on academic performance, as determined by the quality and quantity of scholarly publications. In line with this objective, URAP’s “World Ranking of 2,000 Higher Education Institutions” has been released annually since 2010.

Well, i checked the times higher education ranking 2012-2013 (which I think is among the most accredited along with the QS ranking and shangahai ranking) and i found by taking a quick look 4 universities in the top 400 and maybe if I check again more accurately i ll find more. SO i just wanted to ask, should I depend solely on these ranking or is there anything elsa I should know, because I am considering studying in Turkey next year ??

JOHANNA So if the education in Turkey is so lacking then how to kids from Turkey go abroad and do well in their secondary educations? This has always been a question I would like to have answered.

To be honest I am not surprise that the Turkish Universities do not make the international rankings. Education requires open mindedness and no interference from outside, e.g. government dictating what can and cannot be lectured or researched. Anything that would contradict the belief system is discouraged or forbidden. Correct me if I am wrong, the "Theory of Evolution" is not taught or discussed at lectures.

The rankings involve many factors not just how good the graduates are. I am leary of a Turkish rating agency though. Gazi and Ege universities? Hmmm..

@mara ITU and METU have excellent engineers, especially in the past but under global ranking systems all TR universities disappeared from the radar. There is absolutely a lack of innovative and creative education in Turkey. Hence so many Turks get their education abroad.

JOHANNA DEW I can't speak for this ranking BUT I can tell you that Istanbul Technical University did make the Top 100 in a pole in the USA some years ago. Around 1997 I believe. It is always very close to MIT in the rankings of Tech schools as well. If it a fine school that turns out many well respsected engineers around the World. You can really tell about a school by its alumni and ITU has them in spades.

Dear commentators, just take a look and see who made that survey! It is not an accredited world organization, but a product of Gülen's AKP!
