Police have detained 10 people allegedly involved in a fight between a Syrian family and wedding guests in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa that left eight people wounded.

A Turkish family was holding a wedding ceremony on Sept. 15 on a street alley in the Akşamsettin neighborhood of Şanlıurfa, when a neighbor of Syrian origin allegedly threw garbage on the street from a building. Tension rose when the attendees of the wedding objected to the act and the Syrian citizen called around 50 other Syrians to the scene. The group of Syrians allegedly attacked the wedding revelers with batons, knives and stones, injuring eight people, including children. The eight wounded were reportedly in good condition.

Police came to the scene following calls from local residents and detained 10 people that were allegedly involved in the fight. An investigation has been opened into the incident, while police have also taken security measures in the neighborhood.

A solution to instances of Syrians attacking locals should soon be found, neighborhood residents said, noting that more violent incidents could soon occur otherwise.
